SR-22?s

Some drivers are deemed hazardous drivers. When that happens they may be required to carry a SR-22, an electronic filing with the Department of Motor Vehicles. The amount of time a person must carry a SR-22 can vary, but 3 years is the most common term within the State of California. While most insurance carriers offer SR-22’s, they are usually somewhat more expensive when purchased through preferred insurance carriers. Most drivers who have SR-22 filings are nonstandard insurance clients.

A SR-22 is an electronic form of filing with the Department of Motor Vehicles, or DMV. It immediately notifies the DMV when a consumers’ insurance has been cancelled. Once the DMV has been notified they begin the suspension process on the consumers’ drivers’ license and vehicle registration. These cannot be reinstated until the SR-22 notifies the DMV that the consumers insurance has been reinstated. Once this has been done, the reinstatement fees may be paid and the consumer may begin driving again.

A state may require a SR-22 be carried for many reasons. Often times it is because of DUI’s or accidents without insurance. Although it is mandated by California State law that all drivers carry auto insurance, a large number of drivers remain uninsured. That is where SR-22 filings come in. SR-22 filings make it easier for an officer to identify a dangerous driver and it gives them a legal obligation to pull the driver over for driving on a suspended registration and license.

In most states there is a fee charged to file the SR-22. The filing fee is usually around but may be slightly higher. This is a one time fee, charged at the time of the filing. The SR-22 filing is good for the life of the insurance policy.

If a consumer is carrying a SR-22 it is very important they keep their insurance policy up to date. Constantly paying reinstatement fees can get expensive, and getting caught driving on a suspended license can result in a bad driving record and can be costly. Having a vehicle impounded for no license, registration or insurance will be very costly as well; most police impounds have a minimum hold of 30 days at around a hundred dollars a day. It is therefore important to maintain insurance in those states that mandate auto insurance, without lapse of coverage, maintain a good driving history and avoid SR-22 filings altogether. Failure to uphold continuous insurance coverage may result in the loss of drivers license.

If you don’t have a car, what car, exactly, do you plan on needing to drive?

It’s not likely you’ll be able to get a nonowners SR22. See, it won’t cover you driving any car owned by you or a household member, or regularly available for your use. If you DO have a car you will be driving, you NEED to be added as a driver on that policy. If you don’t, you’ll have to wait until you have a car you need to be driving.

The cost can be anywhere from $ 25 to thousands, depending on the reason your license was suspended, and which coverages are on the car you’ll be regularly driving.
